Dungeons and Dragons is is collaborative storytelling game. It is a game of vast possibilities where you learn to think carefully, to plan, to strategize, to persuade, to resolve conflict, to collaborate, to express yourself more clearly, and so much more, all while exploring memorable locales, meeting fascinating characters in the story, and defeating powerful enemies. In this course, we will play through "The Lost Mine of Phandelver", an official D&D module for beginners (though I will...
Due to the vastness of options in Dungeons and Dragons, students will learn and exercise many skills, including the following: -clear communication -strategy and tactics -collaborative storytelling -vocabulary -critical thinking -teamwork -problem solving -conflict resolution -resolutions of ethical and moral dilemmas -math and reading fluency -etc.
I have spent a great deal of time playing in and running Dungeons and Dragons campaigns. I also have much experience teaching D&D to new players. As far as teaching children goes, I've spent over a decade teaching ages 8-18 in the classroom in subjects ranging from Geometry and Algebra to Latin to Rhetoric, Literature, and Political Philosophy. I have served in many roles from Master Teacher to Head of Curriculum to Network Trainer to Academy Headmaster (all with Great Hearts Academies).
Students will need a completed character which I will check before the first session (students who completed 102 with me have one but may create another manually or use dndbeyond.com). Students would benefit from a copy of the Player's Handbook: https://www.amazon.com/Players-Handbook-Dungeons-Dragons-Wizards/dp/0786965606/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=player%27s+handbook&qid=1609709577&sr=8-3 . If they cannot purchase this, they can access a copy of the Basic Rules online for free: https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
Though there is combat in this game, it is described in words, not images. I will also ask and require students to be conscious of their descriptions, avoiding anything grotesque or inhumane.
To prepare and run this course, I will use my experience and knowledge of (as well as references to) "The Player's Handbook", "The Dungeon Master's Guide", "The Monster Manual", and the module "The Lost Mine of Phandelver".
