Come along on a magical journey to read, discuss, and share your thoughts on Tolkien's classic The Lord of the Rings part 1 book 1 (the first half of The Fellowship of the Ring). We will also learn about Tolkien and his life and discuss what we can learn from each chapter as well as how those insights can influence our own lives. Each week our discussion will be on the chapters read from characters to plot to how the story is developing. This is book club course/social group is on The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Part 1 Book 1 (comprised of 12 chapters). Week 1: We'll learn about Tolkien and start reading Chapter 1 Homework: Read Chapters 1-2 Week 2: We'll discuss Chapters 1-2 and talking how the characters are evolving Homework: Read Chapters 3-4 Week 3: We'll discuss Chapters 3-4 and how Tolkien created the characters and this world in this book Homework: Read Chapters 5-6 Week 4: We'll discuss Chapters 5-6 and see how the characters have changed and what lessons we can take from this masterpiece. Homework: Read Chapters 7-8 Week 5: We'll discuss Chapters 7-8 and how the plot is evolving Homework: Read Chapters 9-10 Week 6: We'll discuss Chapters 9-10 and the characters Homework: Read Chapters 11-12 Week 7: We'll discuss Chapters 11-12 and how we liked or disliked the ending and if we'd recommend Book 1 of The Fellowship of the Ring Homework: None. *subject to change

This book does have some points that may be scary for some students; however, the focus of this class is what we can learn from Tolkien and learn about the structure of this great book.
