Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Danzho'! I am a citizen of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas and would love to show you a little bit about my people and culture. I will use a combination of PowerPoint, videos, and personal cultural items to teach about the Lipan Apache peoples both past and present. I will even teach you a few of our words in our language! We will talk about what Lipan Apache means, the history of the Lipan Apache in Texas and Mexico, what the Lipan Apache are like today, and some notable Lipan Apache people.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
I will be teaching about the harmful treatment of indigenous peoples by the Spanish and Americans in Texas and Mexico. This will include the Spanish missions, the Apache Wars, and attempted extermination of Apaches in Texas. This is taught about in an age appropriate manner and from a Native perspective. We will discuss ceremonies (from a secular perspective) including the girls coming of age ceremony, which takes place during puberty. We won't discuss any aspects of puberty itself, just that this is when the ceremony takes place.

I am Lipan Apache and a citizen of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas. I am culturally intact, learning my language, and am active in my local Native community. I am raising my two children traditionally Apache.
I have noticed my whole life that there is a large educational gap regarding Native peoples, past and present. Most textbooks and information taught in schools is lacking or incorrect. Most people also do not learn about who we are today; 87% of textbooks do not mention us after 1890. As a result of this gap, I began writing an elementary Native American studies curriculum. While it is not yet published, I have taught the curriculum multiple times in person, as well as other short classes from preschool to adult ESL. I have been teaching at schools, libraries, museums, and historical sites for years and my children are homeschooled. I am currently on a committee to help develop a Native studies curriculum for the state of Texas. I teach seminars and workshops to teachers, librarians, and other educators on identifying Native stereotypes and how to select better materials. I have been hired to do this type of training online and in person in several states. I have been hired by several companies as a curriculum consultant and I also personally review curriculum and other materials on my blog.
I teach to help bridge the gap between what people think they know about us and who we really are. I try to break down stereotypes and misinformation. I love to open minds to new information. It is very important for others to learn accurate information about us. Inaccurate education impacts the way people treat us, government policies that impact us, and American (US) portrayal of us that can be harmful. It is also important to learn about Natives directly from us and sources made by us. We tell our stories best. I have noticed most online classes on this subject are largely not taught by Natives.
Some of my favorite educational resources are https://americanindian.si.edu/nk360, eaglespeaker.com, and http://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com.
My son, Aslan Tudor, is a successful Native author by the age of 10! He has two published books, opened an Indigenous comic and game business at age 15, and is now 17.

Please note: I try to accommodate schedule requests as much as possible. If you don't see your requested times, please keep an eye on the class, as it might be scheduled at a later date or send me a message and I will do my best. If you don't see a section to sign up for, it doesn't mean I'm not teaching it, it just means my sections are full. I regularly add sections a few weeks in advance, so please do keep checking back!

***If you are trying to hire me or my son in person, please DO NOT contact me through Outschool, per Outschool policy.***
