Class Experience

During our first class, students will talk about obstacles they have overcome or obstacles they have seen in others' lives. We will come up with a class list of our obstacles. We will begin reading a short story about Helen Keller together in class. This book focuses on Helen Keller's childhood, so in our first class, we will simulate a few of these difficulties. For example, I will mute myself and see if they can figure out what I'm saying. We will talk about ideas for how she could overcome being blind and deaf. They will create a KWL(K-know as in what they know already, W-want to know, L-what they have learned) chart and fill in the first two columns.

In our second class, we will read a bit more about Helen Keller. We will learn about Braille and how Braille is made. Students will participate in a hands-on activity to make their names in Braille. We will talk about Helen Keller's adult life, what she went on to do after she was able to communicate with the world. I will read several quotes from Helen Keller, and students will either agree or disagree with her worldview and decide why. The will finish filling out their KWL chart with what they have learned and share with the class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Laurel, and I have a passion for learning. I love making learning fun for children and engaging them in the material.

I have worked with children ages three to eighteen, teaching both English and Spanish. I learned Spanish through immersion while I lived in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. My husband is from Nicaragua, and meeting him was the reason I became interested in learning another language. Now, I speak Spanish fluently and am working on mastering my fourth and fifth languages. Learning various languages has given me insight on the best and most effective ways to learn and begin speaking from the beginning.

I plan to teach a variety of courses that focus on the languages I love and on my other passion- English literature.
