The Legend of Korra is the sequel to Avatar the Last Airbender, taking place 70 years later in a very changed world. This is a discussion based class where we will talk about each of the four seasons, the internal and external conflicts that are present for the characters, and how these conflicts arise and develop throughout the show. With four very different villians, we learn about different kinds of social conflicts. How do these conflicts arise and how are they resolved? How does Korra grow as a person and an Avatar due to her experiences? Between each class there will be an optional writing prompt. Class 1- Book One: Air. Class 2- Book Two: Spirits. Class 3- Book Three: Change. Class 4- Book Four: Balance This class is for you if you love Avatar and The Legend of Korra and want to go in depth discussing it! You must have already seen Avatar the Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra to join this class (or you're currently watching LOK). The material is more mature in LOK so the age group will be enforced. My teaching style involves asking questions to prompt students, helping them make connections, and introducing them to various tools for deeper understanding. We sometimes play Kahoot! games at the end of class and I try to generate an atmosphere of good humor and respect. Hope to see you in class!
Learning Goals
Students will gain skills to discuss conflicts and character development within the world of Avatar, which will apply to study and discussion of other media and books as well as our current world. Students will practice articulating their thoughts and opinions to other students, discussing other student's ideas, and critical thinking skills.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
The Legend of Korra is more mature and violent than Avatar the Last Airbender. The age group will be enforced and parents should determine if their student should watch the show.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
The Legend of Korra is now on Netflix for an easy way to watch.
Kahoot! will be used in class for trivia games, and downloading the Kahoot! app on a phone is the easiest way for students to play during class. They can also use a second device and go to Kahoot.it to play.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I've been teaching English online for almost three years and enjoy helping students improve their speaking, discussion, and critical thinking skills. Teaching my Avatar class on character development has demonstrated how effective it is to learn about characters and conflicts using source material kids are passionate about! I'm excited to use Korra as a source for discussion on important topics.
