Class experience
The Language of Jazz is about learning the various way jazz is played different from other forms of music. Students will explore the notation, style markings, the rhythms, and feel of the music. The instructor teaches in a call and response method. He demonstrates the skill, asks students to participate in a step by step learning process: counting and clapping rhythms, humming and "air" playing the music, then playing back the music phrase by phrase as lead by the teacher. The student will... • count and clap syncopated rhythms • identify style markings and their syllables • "scat" the syllables of the rhythms • perform music in the style as given by the markings
A band instrument in good working condition (all valves, slides, keys work properly and smoothly)* Pencil and PDFs printed out for class use *Reed players should have at least two good working reeds for the week. Valve brass need oil for valves. Trombone players need slide lubricant (oil or cream lubricant with a water spray bottle).
