Are you ready to read a New York Times Bestseller? Do you like stories that keep you on the edge of your seat? Want to be a part of an interactive and fun book club? Look no further as we dive into this amazing story sure to please readers who love an action packed book! Below is the book blurb (from Amazon) about Chris Colfer's bestseller: " The Land of Stories tells the tale of twins Alex and Conner. Through the mysterious powers of a cherished book of stories, they leave their world behind and find themselves in a foreign land full of wonder and magic where they come face-to-face with fairy tale characters they grew up reading about. But after a series of encounters with witches, wolves, goblins, and trolls alike, getting back home is going to be harder than they thought." So are you ready to take the plunge into the Land of Stories? In this 4 week course, we will meet once a week to read, discuss, and participate in activities structured around our reading in an interactive and engaging way! As an experienced teacher and librarian, I will work with your child during our book club on understanding important elements of a fiction book (characters, setting, conflict, resolution, and theme). Additional skills addressed through the book club will revolve around predictions, connections, and inferences. Each meeting will consist of time to interact with other students through discussion time as well as time to engage your child in comprehension activities. In order to keep the book club centered around student learning, I employ a variety of games, activities, and tasks to check for understanding of the chapters read. During our time together, I also like to use breakout rooms for both group time and 1:1 time. Providing this time allows your child to practice oral language and communication skills with others learners in addition to fostering social skills. Writing activities will be incorporated throughout the book club to allow your child to express their opinion about the book, demonstrate comprehension, and extend their thinking beyond the text. Students will have opportunities to write their response to comprehension questions and questions centered around critical thinking. Additionally, I will post a class challenge after each meeting that will allow your child to dive deeper into the text. It is an optional activity, but is designed for those students who would like additional work outside the assigned weekly reading. Any student who completes a challenge is encouraged to submit it to me for review. I will provide feedback on your child's work and they have the option of sharing it during our meetings. The schedule will be as follows: Note: Please read the Prologue prior to our first meeting. Meeting 1: Read together the first few pages of Chapter 1 Welcoming activity (character development) Context clues and vocabulary work Assignment: Read the rest of Chapter 1 through Chapter 8 Meeting 2: Discuss Chapters 1 - 8 Read a portion of Chapter 9 Activities focused on comprehension and setting Assignment: Read the rest of Chapter 9 through Chapter 15 Meeting 3 : Discuss Chapters 9 - 15 Read a portion of Chapter 16 Activities focused on comprehension and characters Assignment: Read the rest of Chapter 16 to the end of the book Meeting 4: Discuss Chapters 16 - 24 Activities focused on theme and comprehension Book Review - writing assignment reviewing the book Ready to join? Teacher expertise and credentials
I believe in sharing the joy of reading and love to help cultivate that in young readers. Reading is the foundation for all learning and I use my experience as a licensed PK -6 teacher, with a Master's in Reading, to develop reading skills during our book club. I have worked both in the classroom and the library setting and reading is truly a passion of mine. My goal is to create a positive and upbeat book club that will have your child excited about reading and coming each week to participate.
My work as an elementary school librarian allows me to draw on a variety of literacy activities to help make an impactful reading experience for your child. This series has been a best seller and adored by many children in elementary school! Chris Colfer has woven together an unforgettable story your child is sure to love. As my reviews will say, I definitely have an animated and enthusiastic reading style to make the story engaging, upbeat, and a lot of fun!
