Class Experience

In this one-time course, we'll learn about how Korea split into two, how Kim Il-sung took charge of the North, and much about his two successors: Kim Jong-il and Kim Jong-un. We'll also cover what life is like for people in North Korea.

Topics covered:
*How Korea split into two: this topic will start with a discussion about the period during which Japan ruled the Korean peninsula. Japan lost its colonies so the US and Russia agreed Korea should split.
*Korean War: after foreign powers split Korea at the 38th Parallel, Kim Il-sung was put in charge of the North and Syngman Rhee the South. The US and UN helped the South after the North invaded (later helped by China), hoping to claim all of Korea as its own. The brutal conflict ended with an agreement to stop fighting.
*Kim Il-sung perfected the personality cult technique to win over the hearts of his country (as far as anyone knew). He kept the country locked up tight, had scientists name flowers after him, had poets create devotionals for the country to learn, and he had authors craft beautiful stories about his miraculous birth and childhood.
*Kim Jong-il: successor who lacked his father's military experience. He'd have to create his own legacy. He'd face the darkest days of the DPRK's history.
*Kim Jong-un: the "great" successor and youngest heir who constantly has to look over his shoulder. Educated in the West, this despot with a preference for finer things rules the DPRK today. The proverbial "Iron Curtain" doesn't appear to be lifting.

Students will be asked to answer discussion questions based on their understanding of the course material, politics, and world history. Respect for one another's opinions is critical. All political views and world views are welcome. Remarks that disparage or discourage will not be allowed. Students will be made aware of this policy within the first few minutes of class.

Teaching style: students will never hear my political opinion, but I'd love to hear theirs. Our course will consist of a lecture and a discussion during which students are encouraged to share their thoughts and ideas. We'll spend time ideologies, definitions, and historical facts.

Learning Goals

*Students will gain a firm understanding of North Korea's history and its 3 dictators of the past and present. They'll be able to speak with confidence about the Korean War and list details about each member of the Kim Dynasty. Students will also be able to share with others what life is like for people still living in North Korea today.
*Students will be able to compare and contrast the socialist government of North Korea to other communist/socialist countries
*Students will learn to respectfully share political policies
*Students will understand and analyze historical and political facts

Parental Guidance
This course will cover the history of tyrannical dictators who caused the deaths of (possibly) millions by execution, work camps, and starvation. While it is not the teacher's intention to spent much class time on violence, it cannot be overlooked. If a parent wishes to protect their child from the evil acts committed by Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il, and Kim Jong-un, their child should not enroll in this course. The terrors of history cannot be avoided but the teacher will not dwell on horrific details unnecessarily. Graphic photos will not be shown. Instead we'll focus on the structure of the government that allowed a tyrant to rise to power and the personality cult strategy - not the evil acts committed.

Teacher expertise and credentials
We'll examine historical facts as historians do. We will be sensitive to the victims of this oppressive regime.
My experience in the classroom and working with children at church have equipped me to handle sensitive topics. I've attended several graduate-level courses on meeting the needs of sensitive learners. here are some helpful classroom techniques I've learned when handling sensitive course material:
*In the high school classroom, I learned to back off of a subject and re-direct the class if a student appears upset.
I will remain conscious of each student's emotional well-being as we take in difficult events of the past. I've learned that it is important to contact parents if their child appears to be upset durning class.
*Ideas are argued about, not people. Because of the political nature of this course, students will exchange sensitive ideas and feelings. Every student should feel comfortable doing so. Intolerance or insensitivity toward another student is not permissible and students will be made aware of this classroom rule within the first few minutes of class. I will facilitate discussions and will immediately intervene if a student uses language or expressions that are disparaging, ridiculing, or discouraging toward another student or people group.
*Each student's experience and input is equally valuable and will be treated as such. If a student feels marginalized or that their input has been minimized in any way, I beg that they discuss it with me privately without fear or repercussions so that I can correct myself or the student who made them feel this way.
*I'm aware that there is a variety of learning styles among middle school and high school students. My assessments in this course rely on verbal discussions.
