Class Experience

Students will begin with a short series of drama games to warm up and get to know each other. Then we will read the script of "A Jungle Book" together. This is a new adaptation and is based on the original Mowgli stories by Rudyard Kipling. Students will play more than one role and will be encouraged to be as creative as they want to, for example by trying out different voices for their characters. We will discuss the story and how to use our voices to make a jungle soundscape and to express the characters' intentions and personalities. To finish we'll experiment with reading some sections again, incorporating our new ideas.

No previous acting experience is required and no prior knowledge of the text is necessary. However, if you feel that your child would benefit from reading the script before the class starts I can share this with you.
Make sure that your kids know that this is a new version and not the classic Disney musical.

The class is entirely interactive. My teaching style is to facilitate, support and encourage kids.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to read a play text aloud. Their creativity, confidence and collaborative skills will increase. They will encounter some of Rudyard Kipling's original poetic language and explore his Mowgli stories.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, my name's Sarah and I'm a professonal writer and theatre maker. I use my own adaptations of classic texts to teach classes in Readers' Theater. Current scripts include "The Jungle Book", "The Nutcracker", "Beauty and the Beast" and "A Christmas Carol". My lessons are totally interactive and require no memorisation. We begin with a short vocal warm up exercise to get everyone loosened up and feeling comfortable and creative. Then we read the script aloud together. Students are encouraged to try out different voices and ways of expressing emotion. We talk about the story and the characters and then we read the script again. Reading the script of a play aloud is a great way of engaging kids in reading and encouraging creativity, confidence and collaborative working skills. Most importantly, it's fun!

I have a degree in Drama and Theatre Studies and I am a qualified ESOL teacher (English for Speakers of other Languages). I have been teaching online for 2 years. As a theatre maker, I make work for young audiences in the UK and Italy and run drama workshops for children. I have been passionate about theatre, reading and the importance of telling stories since I was a small child.

I live in London with my partner, three children and our puppy. When I'm not working, watching plays or reading, I like spending as much time outside in the open air as possible.

I am very excited about sharing my passion for the theatre and reading with your children and looking forward to meeting you soon!
