In this 12-week flex class, students will read Brian Selzick's graphic novel, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, and complete reading reflections as well as creative writing and vocabulary building activities inspired by the book.

Class Experience


During each week of this 12-week flex course I will support students by...

• Facilitating asynchronous discussions with questions designed to check comprehension as well as questions that ask students to explore how the unique features of a graphic novel work together to tell a story.
• Posting questions that encourage learners to think critically and to support their conclusions with textual evidence, and/or draw connections between the reading, their own lives, and the world around them....

This class is taught in English.

As they read The Invention of Hugo Cabret, students will peek at the early history of film through the eyes of a Depression-era French orphan, increase their understanding of the elements of narrative and graphic novels, and develop some facility with the tools writers need to write clear sentences and tell compelling stories.

This course is asynchronous; there are no class meetings so all work is completed outside class.

Students will receive learning resources with links to a read-aloud screencasts of each chapter but it would be ideal if they also had a paper or Kindle copy of the graphic novel.

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:Google Drive
Kahoot

No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
