Description

Class Experience

In this two-week camp, students will read the book “The House on Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros. “The House on Mango Street” has been recognized by critics, teachers, and readers alike as one of most important contributions to modern young adult literature. Its easy-to-read format and meaningful content make it a student favorite. Students will engage in conversations about the book and use the text to support their opinions. 
Students will build reading comprehension strategies by summarizing the text, making connections to the text, asking higher-level questions, and engaging in analytical discussion.

I am a state certified pre-service high school teacher and am currently attending university full-time to earn my second degree in Secondary English Language Arts and Reading Education.

Students will read about 25 pages each week and complete guided notes to aid in discussion.

Students will need a copy of “House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros either in print or e-book.
Students should also bring a way to take notes to class. 
The guided notes activity will be provided via pdf and can be printed at home or referenced digitally.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Students will be assessed with a final short-writing reflection.

2 hours 15 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
