The Hobbit: Book Club for Teens
Class experience
In this course, we will read through and seminar on "The Hobbit" together. There will be no lectures or PowerPoints. There will be no worksheets. There will be no quizzes or tests. There will only be seminars, or discussions. At the start of the seminar, I will ask one question that has occurred to me as I read along with you. For example, I may ask, "What does it mean to be a Took and what does it mean to be a Baggins?" You'll have about two minutes to gather your thoughts using your book....
In this and other "Book Club" students will work through a great book, learn to read carefully, to listen to others thoughtfully, to express their ideas clearly, to disagree graciously, to build on the ideas of others, to synthesize ideas across texts, and far more.
I have taught literature in the Academy (grades 6-12) for over a decade, have served as Master Teacher of Literature and Composition, Head of Curriculum, Network Trainer (Great Hearts Academies), and Headmaster of Anthem Preparatory Academy.
Any unabridged copy of "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien but, since we'll be using page numbers in discussion, I recommend this one: https://www.amazon.com/Hobbit-There-Again-Tolkien-Paperback/dp/B00OHXKIWG/ref=sr_1_14?dchild=1&keywords=the+hobbit&qid=1606253934&sr=8-14
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
