Class Experience

World War 2 was a horrific time for millions of people throughout the world. Can you imagine your town being taken over by the Nazi regime? That was the unfortunate reality for millions of people throughout Europe. This class will explore how the people of the Netherlands reacted to their occupation by the Nazis. While many adjusted to life under the Nazi regime, and others even worked with the Nazis, many Dutch resisted the Nazi occupation in a variety of ways. We will particularly focus on the role of teenagers in the resistance movement.
A combination lecture and open discussion is my favorite way to teach. Students are encouraged to contribute to share their thoughts through discussion or by typing in the chat box. Don’t worry there is no pressure to share if you are not feeling it. Often great questions or comments help to change the direction of our class or get us further into these fascinating subjects!
Our discussion will be guided by taking a look at first hand accounts, primary sources and images from the time period.

Parental Guidance
We will touch on a variety of tough topics in this class. While not focused on warfare or the Holocaust itself, these subjects will be addressed. Violence often goes hand in hand with resistance and oppression, and while our discussion of this topic will be age appropriate, it may be disturbing to some students. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to reach out to me to see if this class is appropriate for your child.

This class is inspired by my personal study of the Dutch Resistance and resistance movements throughout history.
I have taught a variety of social studies courses in both the traditional classroom and online environment for over 13 years. I love making history come to life through first hand accounts, images and stories. While my background is in middle and high school education, I have worked with younger (and older) learners as well. As a homeschooling mom of two (ages 4 and 7) I love the Outschool concept and how it enables teachers to personalize learning for all!
I love helping students dig deep into the past, learn the facts, and then develop their own opinions about critical events in history. Having fun while we learn is so important! I focus on keeping the classroom environment accepting of all students while delving into these important topics.
