Plagues and pandemics are a frequent occurrence in world history. A plague can collapse a civilization or an empire, but it can also create opportunities that would not have existed without the chaos. Worldwide, plagues and pandemics have cycled through in a variety of forms and with a variety of different conditions. Humans deal with plagues in a variety of ways throughout history, both at a governmental and individual level. This course will explore several of the most significant...
Students will explore the impact of plagues and pandemics on a population, including long and short terms effects.
I have a master's degree in history from the University of Cambridge and 15 years experience teaching history, including AP approved world history courses which I have taught and graded for the College Board.
Homework Offered
Writing and reading assignments will be provided each week for the student to consider more deeply the topics we discuss in class.Assessments Offered
Assessment will be provided in any way the family requests.Grades Offered
This course, by nature, will address themes of disease and death in a variety of historical contexts. The focus of this course will not be on the deaths, but the impact of these plagues--both positive and negative--in their historical context regarding politics, economics, and society. Parents are encouraged to monitor their student's responses, however, as this course is for high school aged students, this material will not be too sensitive for most students.
