The History of Classical Music in 60 Minutes: From Medieval Monks to Star Wars!

In this one-time course, we will chronologically discuss and listen to music from the year 900 to 2020, and provide a broad look at how music evolved over time, and for us to understand how the music we love and play today came to be.

Description

Class Experience

Students will gain a broad understanding of the history of Western Music. They will learn the characteristics, style, genre, composers, and musicians from each of the 6 eras of Western Music, and how music progressed through time. The goal of this class is to provide an in-depth context behind the music the students may either be playing in their band or orchestra, or behind the music that they love listening to. With this broad knowledge, the ultimate goal is to leave each student with the curiosity to discover all the amazing music that exists in our world, and to want to know more about the music we hear in our lives everyday.
There is no homework, but a recommended listening guide will be shared for further exploration.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
