Class Experience

Students will gain a general understanding of early Ancient Roman history--their mythological foundations, the individuals whose deeds and character shaped Roman cultural mores, and the development of an army who would eventually bring other civilizations to their knees. They will learn the differences between ancient and modern historical methodologies and how to separate the myths from facts surrounding Ancient Rome.
I have an MA in Classical Studies from Tufts University where I was a teaching assistant for a Roman history course. My undergraduate and graduate research focused heavily on the Romans (religion, history, and military) and Latin literature of the Golden and Silver Ages. I have spent two summers in Italy, one for independent, undergraduate research and the other for The Summer Classical School at The American Academy in Rome. I have taught Latin and Roman history, culture, and literature to middle to college level students and to my daughter who just turned eight.
1. Viewing the weekly videos. There will be two each week.
2. Reading the corresponding articles. There will be 1-2 for each lesson.
3. Respond to the discussion board questions and comment on at least one other student's post.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will be assessed on their participation on the discussion board and a final assessment, which is 25 questions, multiple-choice.
No live meetings, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Ancient Roman culture was violent by nature, thus this class does cover death, murder, and war; however, these topics are handled with utmost care, are age-appropriate, and not at all graphic in nature.
