Class Experience

Where did hydrogen get its name? Where did the name oganesson come from? And what exactly is seaborgium? Learn about all these and more! This class is the perfect follow up to The History, Geography, and Mythology of the Periodic Table but both classes can stand on their own- they just cover the stories behind different elements.

This 45 minute live class will explore the origins of the names of many elements of the periodic table that weren't covered in Part 1. Many of the element names can be traced back to mythology, names of scientists, or geographic locations, and we will discuss examples of all of these in class.

Class will be a mixture of instructor lecture and class discussion. At the end of class, if time permits, we will play a matching game as a class to match element names to their symbols.

No homework will be assigned in this class, but a handout of the information-packed slides from class will be provided for students to review on their own.

From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest and motivation- from high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never ending questions. I can tailor my teaching style to fit the learner, and I do what I can to make it approachable by anyone.
