This class will focus on discussing the historical references and philosophical themes found in the MCU. Each class will explore a different MCU film and discuss the themes found therein. The schedule will be as follows: 1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Topics of discussion: American Values, 9/11, U.S. foreign policy in the 21st century, The ethics of drone warfare, etc.) 2. Black Panther (Topics of Discussion: Nationalism, Imperialism, the American Civil Rights Movement, What makes a good villain, etc.) 3. Captain America: Civil War (Topics of Discussion: the ideology of Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, the Patriot Act, the war on Terror, etc.) 4. Avengers: Infinity War/Avenger: Endgame (Topics of Discussion: What makes Thanos a good villain, the ethics of climate change, problems/paradoxes in Ethics, etc.) Through talking about the MCU the student will be introduced to ideas from American History and Philosophy. Again, the class will primarily be focused on group discussion but I will also introduce and explain complex historical/philosophical ideas where needed.Due to the nature of the class, it will be expected that that student has watched the movies.
Learning Goals
Through talking about the MCU the student will be introduced to ideas from American History and Philosophy. Furthermore, they will learn and practice critical thinking and discussion skills. They will also be introduced to and taught to practice literary techniques such as character development, plot analysis, and exploring themes/tropes within a narrative.

We will be discussing and watching clips from marvel films.
