Note: I have recently accepted a full-time position and now teach very few classes on Outschool. At this time, I am unable to accommodate class requests. Thank you! In society today, ADHD is often seen only in a negative light. Yet along with things like inattentiveness and procrastination, can come advantages like creativity and hyperfocus. In this one-time-course, students will learn about the positive aspects that often accompany ADHD. I will introduce students, in layman's terms, to what research suggests are some of the advantages of having ADHD. Students will also learn about celebrities who have succeeded not in spite of, but perhaps BECAUSE of, their ADHD. It is my hope that after taking this class, students will see their ADHD as less of a burden and in a more positive light. This class is almost identical to my "ADHD Superpowers" class, but the discussion will be geared toward older students and be presented in a more mature way. I use a Prezi and a PowerPoint with visuals to present the material while encouraging discussion and participation as students share their gifts. Students are given many opportunities to share, but are never forced to. I am known for my ability to relate to and engage with learners of all ages, and am very passionate about this topic. I truly feel that students with ADHD have some very special, and often overlooked, gifts. If your learner enjoys this class, they may also enjoy my weekly club class, "ADHD Teens." .

Teacher expertise and credentials
Iowa Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Master's Degree in Education from Morningside College
I have been teaching for more than 15 years, and I have a Master's degree in education. Coursework in understanding and teaching exceptional students was required to complete this degree.
I have also had many students with ADHD in my classes. I became known for my approach and success with students who struggled with their ADHD. Whether it was my high-energy teaching style or just the soft spot I have for these students, they have seemed to excel in my class.
Recently I have become more interested in this topic. After some research, I gave a presentation on this subject matter to the staff in my home school assistance program. It was my goal to inform and also to encourage teachers to look at students with ADHD through the positive lens that they deserve to be seen in. It occurred to me that students who have ADHD could really use this information as well. Perhaps if they knew more about the benefits that can accompany their ADHD, they may be better able to harness them and feel better about themselves as a whole.
It is my hope that after taking this class, students will see their ADHD as less of a burden and in a more positive light.
Note: Class runtime varies. The more students enroll and the more they participate, the longer class will go. Average time is about 40 minutes, but class has run anywhere from 35-50 minutes in the past.
