In Part 1 of this 3-part flexible schedule semester course spanning the Hero's Journey in fiction writing, students will study the first 5 stages of the Hero's Journey, which are collectively known as the Hero's Departure and generally make up Act One of a story that follows this classic story structure. With my implementation of a Classcraft interactive game that I have designed specifically for this FLEX course, learners will also begin their very own Hero's Journey together as a...
This 3-part semester FLEX course has been designed to meet the Common Core Standards, English Language Arts (ELA) Standards for Writing specific to narratives for grades 6-12, including those regarding Production and Distribution of Writing, Research to Build and Present Knowledge, and Range of Writing.
I am a Classcraft Certified Educator.
Students will read the first half of The Hero's Guidebook: Creating Your Own Hero's Journey by Zachary Hamby for this part of the course. The entire book is only 115 pages. I may also post resources for the learners from time to time as I find them, as optional supplementary reading material. Heroes and heroines will complete a short (less than 1 page) writing assignment related to each stage of the Hero’s Journey—5 in total for this part of the course. Additionally, learners are expected to participate in multiple discussions (2-4) throughout each week. One discussion per week will be focused on the content of the reading and lectures, and there will be a discussion dedicated to each writing assignment. Other discussions will be related to the stage of the Hero's Journey we are on that week. Young heroes and heroines will progress through each stage of the Hero's Journey together by completing the corresponding quests in the interactive multiplayer online role-playing Classcraft game I designed for this course. There are 5 quests in this part of the course, and teamwork is required in order to complete each quest.
Students are expected to read The Hero's Guidebook: Creating Your Own Hero's Journey by Zachary Hamby outside of class. This book is available on Amazon in paperback for $10, or $3 on Kindle. I will also be referencing both Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces and Christopher Vogler's The Writer's Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers, but students are not expected to read these books during this course—although I do recommend them if your learner is interested in further study!
No live meetings, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
The Classcraft interactive team game component of this course requires a minimum of 3 learners per team. While at least 2 teams are ideal, please note that the enrollment minimum of 3 learners is a requirement for this course to run.
