The Hero's Journey and Creative Writing
In this 55-minute class, students will be introduced to a popular and time-tested story archetype- The Hero's Journey- and learn to utilize it as they brainstorm and plan their own creative writing project.

US Grade 9 - 12
Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this one-time class, students will be introduced to a story archetype, or story pattern, known as the Hero's Journey, or the Heroic Journey. During the session, we will define the Hero's Journey and discuss the stages involved. This class is lecture heavy, with optional fill-in-the-blank notes and a "writer's storyboard" tool for brainstorming. While the storyboard is also optional, it is highly recommended! At the end of this class, students should be able to... 1. Explain the structure of the Hero's Journey story pattern and why it might be useful for a writer. 2. Use their knowledge of the Hero's Journey to guide their own brainstorming and planning for an original, creative writing project.

We will be referencing Peter Beagle's fantasy novel "The Last Unicorn" throughout the class (excerpts will be displayed on slides), but purchasing and reading the book prior to class is not required. However, it can be found on amazon for purchase if you choose.
