Description
Class Experience
In this one week camp, the students will explore three of the classic short stories in science fiction. Students will read each short story before class begins. Each lesson will cover some basic biographical information about the writer and the historical/cultural background needed to analyze the story. Then we explore how the writer used their "What if..." to structure their short story. Finally we will spend a significant amount of each class discussing the ethical and scientific issues...
Students will gain a new appreciation for these classic science fiction short stories, better understand their plot and structure, and enjoy discussing the implied ethical/scientific issues.
I am an enthusiastic reader of science fiction and genuinely enjoy helping students appreciate it too.
Students will read each short story before class begins. Most of these short stories and should take a student 1-2 hours at most to read.
3 files available upon enrollmentAll of these stories can be accessed via free PDFs online.
2 hours 45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Any discussion of ethics is potentially controversial. "By His Bootstraps" features a distasteful protagonist who uses alcohol and tobacco and includes some mature and impolite words. "Harrison Bergeron" while not directed at such a mature audience is very disturbing in terms of ethics. You know your learner best. If you are concerned about the maturity/impolite nature of any of the stories or the ethical questions, please feel free to preview the stories and to reach out before class begins to talk about how the issues will be covered.
