Class Experience

Katsushika Hokusai is Japan's most famous painter and wood cutter. Students will learn more about Hokusai and his interesting technique. We will have an open discussion about his art and students will be encouraged to critique the pieces we study.

After the initial discussion, students will understand the process involved in creating their own work of art; A Great Wave! We will review different techniques and concepts needed to create a successful Hokusai inspired painting.

There will be no homework, although students will be encouraged to keep practicing the new skills they will have learned.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello and welcome! I’m Kristen, a passionate educator who has been teaching on Outschool since 2017. With over a decade of experience as a certified art teacher and a school counselor, I love combining creativity with social-emotional learning (SEL) to help kids build confidence, resilience, and self-expression. My classes are a safe, encouraging space where learners can explore their imagination, develop emotional intelligence, and form meaningful connections—all while having fun!

As a pre-licensed school counselor with years of experience supporting students of all ages, I understand how important it is for children to feel seen, heard, and valued. That’s why I design engaging, hands-on classes that blend art, storytelling, and SEL concepts in a way that makes learning both meaningful and enjoyable. Whether we’re creating vision boards for goal-setting, making comic strips about managing big emotions, or diving into mindfulness through doodling, every class is built to spark creativity and personal growth.

I believe learning should be joyful, interactive, and filled with opportunities for self-discovery. My goal is to empower kids with the tools they need to express themselves, navigate challenges, and build positive relationships—all while embracing their individuality. I can’t wait to meet your learner and help them grow in both creativity and confidence!

Aside from teaching in a private classroom setting, I have also taught summer camps, Girl Scout troops, and homeschool group art lessons. Let’s create, connect, and have fun together—I look forward to seeing you in class! 🎨✨
