How would you like to spend time traveling around California, seeing the sights, and enjoying the view? In this one-session story-based class, I'll read aloud from great picture books and tell funny stories of Californians that will make you think someone made them up! We'll start with a map and a plan, travel up and down the state, and then we'll read three more beautiful and interesting books about California and the people who live there. We'll cover Eureka, Sonoma, San Francisco, Sacramento, Coloma, Yosemite, Monterey, the Central Valley, Death Valley, Los Angeles, San Juan Capistrano, San Diego, Palm Springs, and the Channel Islands. Phew! What a journey! While I read and we talk about the Golden State together, you'll have pictures to print and color, a map to mark our journey, and a maze to escape from, too! I'll also share some treasures from the Golden State, so keep your eye out.
Learning Goals
-Map skills, following locations, and ordinal directions on a map
-Reading comprehension, with questions and plenty of discussion about the text
-Listening for context clues
-History of California, the Gold Rush, the missions system, and the indigenous people who came before statehood
-California's flag, symbols, and capital

I'll be adding links in the classroom to maps, coloring pages, and mazes to download. Bring markers, crayons, or colored pencils to class.
