The ability to navigate a grocery store, come out with precisely what you need, and stay within a budget is a skill set foreign to many adults. While it’s not always on the radar as a crucial learning experience, it’s directly linked to both managing finances and preparing meals, and it’s just as vital. This live course is a hilarious, practical, and memorable route to becoming a competent shopper. We will develop budgets, menus, and lists relative to various grocery shopping needs. We will learn to pilot through stores full of traps set to entice you to toss both your budget and healthy diet to the wind. We will learn quick tips to help us choose better deals and better products and save time. Along the way, we’ll solve a few mysteries, compete in a few creative challenges, and improve our ability to respond to weird questions with complete and well-thought-out answers! Each 55-minute meeting will be filled with crucial information. Students will have projects to reinforce the information and fun challenges to keep them engaged. Week 1: Students will learn about food labels and how to quickly find the most important information on them. They will learn to decipher clues about food quality and quantity. They will also start getting closely acquainted with their pantry and fridge... Week 2: They will be introduced to how media impacts food choices before and during a grocery shopping trip. Students will also be introduced to the layout of a grocery store and the hidden agenda behind it. We'll address non-supermarket options for purchasing food and explore the pros and cons of "shopping around." Week 3: Students will learn about and develop a grocery budget, a weekly menu, and a comprehensive shopping list. They will learn some shopping survival tips to keep more money in their wallets and fewer unhealthy items in their pantry. Week 4: This week is action-packed! Students will learn to compare prices and labels. They will learn when it’s okay to go “off-list” and when to stick like glue to the plan. They will put into action some of the previously learned shopping survival techniques and be on the lookout for some of the traps designed to unravel their plans.
