Description
Class Experience
To develop life skills through preparing and baking a sweet treat (fruit scones) To be able to follow step-by-step visual demonstrations. To use equipment such as measuring cups or scales to measure equipment correctly.
I have been a qualified Food Technology teacher for 17 years and worked with SEN/neurodiverse children in alternative education for the past ten. I have vast experience of teaching children life skills such as baking. I will split the lesson into short simple demonstrations that students can follow. Academically this class is paced at a lower developmental age of 5-7 years. However, social interaction and content will be appropriate for an older child (11-15 years).
No homework will be provided after this class, however students are welcome to use the recipe provided to bake more scummy scone treats!
Ingredients (makes 6 scones) 2 cups/250g self-raising flour (plus little for dusting work surface and tray) 1 level teaspoons baking powder 2tbsp/ 25g sugar 1/4 cup 50g butter, softened cut into pieces (soft butter or margarine will also work) 1 eggs Little milk (to add to dough 1 teaspoon at a time) Handful of sultanas (optional as you can just have plain scones) Equipment Oven (pre-heated at 200C) Measuring cups or measuring scales Measuring bowl Mixing bowl Sieve Measuring jug Fork/spoon/knife Round cutter (between 2-3inches wide) Baking tray Parchment paper (or flour to dust tray) Allergen Awareness: Please note that the recipe provided contains the allergens gluten (flour), dairy (milk, butter) and eggs. These items can be substituted using gluten free flour and dairy free butter and milk. The recipe can be used without eggs by adding extra dairy free milk as a substitute.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
1 hour per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Please observe or assist any student using dangerous equipment in the kitchen. This includes the oven, sharp knifes, graters or any heavy equipment. Help may also be required at other stages (e.g. cracking the egg, measuring the ingredients). I will be sharing a recipe and slide presentation through the approved platform Canva. No account will be required. I will send the recipe the day before to print at your convenience.
