US Grade 5 - 8
Students will learn new vocabulary for each chapter that I provide ahead of time. We will review literary elements and pull out several examples per chapter. For example: author's purpose, tone, mood, figurative language, plot, setting, dialogue and character development. Each class, students will have read the chapter before meeting as to ensure we are all prepared to discuss. For example, before class number 1, students must read chapter number 1 and so on, totaling the 8 chapters. Each...

Students will learn how author's diction (word choice) effects the overall mood and tone of a story. Students will also examine how character development is tracked through a story and how character motive helps move a story along.
I have been an ELA teacher for 9 years. I have taught middle grades (6-8) for the past 7 years. I private tutor ELA and reading as well. I have taught several novels in class such as, Hoot, Hatchet, 1984, Lord of the Flies, and many more!
Homework Offered
Students are required to read the assigned chapter before each class begins. There will be discussion questions and vocabulary assigned. The end project will be completed individually. Homework will take no longer than 20 minutes per class, 40 minutes per week, with the exception of the project. The novel is 368 pages in total. Chapter 1 is 29 pages of reading with some illustrations, chapter 2 is 25 pages of reading with some illustrations, chapter 3 is 35 pages of reading with some illustrations, chapter 4 is 42 pages of reading with some illustrations, chapter 5 plus the interlude is 25 pages of reading with some illustrations, chapter 6 is 37 pages of reading with some illustrations, chapter 7 is 81 pages of reading with some illustrations and chapter 8 is 13 pages of reading with some illustrations. There is an optional "Acknowledgements" and "The Story Behind The Graveyard Book" section after chapter 8.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class

For the end project, students will possibly need access to Google Drive, writing supplies (paper and pencil) or coloring supplies (blank white paper, colored pencils, markers). They may use any household items or computer software that they already have access to.
This novel discusses murder, death, ghosts and all things macabre! If your student is not at the maturity level to discuss such content as it pertains to literature, I would not advise this class.
