Class Experience

This class will offer instruction in some of the common grammar rules. Some of these rules include sentence fragments, comma splice run on sentences, fused sentences, subject-verb agreement, pronoun-antecedent agreement, and others. My class offers a balance of lecture/instruction and time for student interaction and questions. I will teach with some visual aids such as Power Point slides as well as direct instruction. My teaching style values the learning styles of each student and provides students in the class with time for individual questions. Students should have a basic understanding of the parts of speech, but otherwise no prior knowledge is required.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their ability to identify grammar errors in writing and learn how to fix some of the common grammar errors.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Currently I am a professor of writing, literature, and history. I hold a master's in English/literature, a master's in History, a bachelor's in American History and English. Also, I am certified in teaching and learning online.

Previously, I taught for 15 years in both public and independent schools (middle and upper grades) in English, writing, and history. I am a professional tutor for the SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT, HSPT, AP, study skills, writing, and college essays. Currently I teach at the U.S. Naval Academy.

My teaching philosophy is that a teacher/professor should make students feel as though their ideas matter. Education should not be about the teacher talking down to the students, but engaging them and guiding them toward knowledge.

Something fun and personal about me: I used to be a TV and radio weather person and I still record radio commercials today. Also, I am a certified archery instructor by the National Archery in the Schools Program.
