This is an introductory science course and is the basis for further study of physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, and other sciences. This course involves the investigation of radioactivity and nuclear chemistry (fusion and fission reactions). In this course we will cover the types of radioactive decay and nuclear chemistry. During this course there will be 3 mini projects: Marie Curie, radiopharmaceuticals, and advantages and disadvantages of nuclear chemistry. Mathematical skills...
After taking this course the student should be able to: 1. Develop models to illustrate the changes in the composition of the nucleus of the atom 2. Differientiate and illustrate where energy released during the process of fission, fusion, and radioactive decay. 3. Summarize the advantages and disadvantages of nuclear chemistry 4. Summarize the role that Marie Curie played in radioactivity and nuclear chemistry.
I am currenting teaching 9th grade physical science. This is one my favorite sections to teach of this course. Personally I feel that that I bring these topics to life with hands on acitivites and technology.
Homework will include an interactive notebook with acitivities, choice board, or Ted-Ed video.
All of the curriculum materials will be digital and provided by the teacher. Students will have to purchase materials for the half life activity. Students will also need: notebook, pen or pencil, extra device (tablet, cell phone), and colored pencils.
The student will be assessed with formative (warm ups and exit tickets) and summative assesments (short tests)
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
