This is a reading comprehension class. Students will need to have the novel and be willing to read parts or chapters daily. Read Aloud: Auditory listening and reading aloud is great for learners who struggle with attention and memory, reading fluency skills, and those who prefer to listen and interact while reading. This class provides auditory instruction paired with visual instruction using graphic organizers for comprehension skills and writing prompts. Learners read along. Learners are encouraged to read-aloud, but it is not mandatory as some learners need time to build confidence with reading aloud skills. Learners will: • Gain comprehension skills to compare literature elements, author style, and enjoyment • Develop auditory listening skills that build and reinforce comprehension • Learn the skill of reading to relax and relaxing to read a fun book Learners can expect to: • Enjoy and participate in daily read aloud passages • Compare and contrast the story plots, characters, and settings • Discuss time eras, events, story details, and imagined geographic locations • Increase story-based vocabulary word knowledge and build opinion-making skills How we spend each session: Most of the class time focuses on reading aloud and listening for new vocabulary words, listening as sentences take shape, and connecting details for comprehension. Learners can take notes. Pausing to explain words, concepts, or share thoughts occurs during the reading. Learners can volunteer to read. If no learner volunteers, the teacher reads and the learners read along in their books. We open each class by catching up on the story so far. As the class ends, we review what notes fit the organizer. Learners can ask questions by raising a voice. Reading and listening is a form of interactive learning to improve speaking and reading fluency. During reading segments, learners are engaged participants of the story. Materials: Book: The Giver by Lois Lowry Grades: 5-8 comprehension, graphic organizers Learn about: The mysterious dystopian world that doesn’t make sense to a boy with great wit. This book sometimes makes the "list" of banned books. We skip chapter five (5) because the content is a little beyond the topics for class discussion. Students will not have any problems understanding the full novel. Chapter five will be highlighted in review. The content in the novel is meant to be thought provoking and I teach the content objectively. Readers are encouraged to build their philosophy perspectives and react to things they disagree with in the story.
The book is well written and appropriate for coming-of-age readers. The controversial issues in the story (selecting the strong) teach the skill of rejecting harmful societal rules. The lesson is to allow learners to question right or wrong from their point of view of growing up.

I love reading to students using auditory read-aloud as a teaching method. Podcasts, immersive reading, videos, and employee training videos all use auditory learning strategies. Auditory read aloud helps support struggling readers who may learn through hearing content. I teach general and special education by day. I provide supportive learning for all learners. I use simplified visuals with extra space and shorter directions. This helps reduce work/tasks anxiety and motivates learners who struggle with the 'see too much' on a page or slide. The daily tasks are organized to be predictable and direct.
My specialties are:
Breaking down the concepts
Providing discrete repetition
Visual directions
Skill chunking & chaining
Specialized instruction for learning challenges
Simplified structures for attention & processing
Giving positive feedback and cues
