Run, run, as fast as you can! This three-day class will explore different versions of the story The Gingerbread Man through comprehension, art, and movement activities. For our first session we will read the traditional version of the story. Then learners will create gingerbread man puppets by playing the roll-a-candy drawing game. Finally, they will draw their own “story maps” to retell the story. In our second class we will read The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Ernst, and become "difference detectives", paying careful attention to parts of the story that are different from the original version and parts that are the same. Then we will learn to draw our own candy-covered gingerbread houses. During our third class we will read The Gingerbread Cowboy by Janet Squires. After the story, we will brainstorm ideas for our own gingerbread stories by paying attention to story elements such as characters, setting, and the sequence of events. Learners will then create and design their own original gingerbread story characters. I will lead children through each activity step-by-step, and classes will incorporate movement activities and time for discussion!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, and welcome to my Outschool Page! I am excited to offer classes that allow young children to create, explore, and imagine! In these classes, students will learn more about themselves and the world around them through art, literature, and hands-on projects.
I earned my M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education and have been teaching for 12 years, working with children ages 5-10. I currently teach first grade and love introducing my students to the world of reading and writing! I believe in the importance of sharing books that are both "windows and mirrors" (an idea originally described by Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop) with my students. In other words, children should have many opportunities to see themselves reflected in the stories they read, and should also have opportunities to use books to learn about other perspectives and ways of life. My teaching approach combines play, discovery, and project-based learning with direct instruction.
I consider myself a lifelong student, and my work in the classroom often inspires me to learn more! I love to visit museums, travel, and read about nature, history, and other countries and cultures. In my free time I also enjoy crafting, listening to Broadway show-tunes, and spending time with my family. I look forward to sharing my love of learning with students on Outschool!
