Class Experience

*Summer Cohorts Coming Soon*
There is a curious and creative genius in all of us but in this class we specifically nurture those abilities!
Gifted and talented students and those with high abilities often thrive in environments with acceleration, challenge, and similar peer grouping. Research from the National Association for Gifted Children has shown that many high-achieving students are not given the chance to excel within traditional education programs. When grouped together as a cohort, studies report students showing positive gains in social, emotional, and cognitive skills. For students looking for a divergent learning environment, join this weekly cohort filled with creative enrichment activities and socialization based upon the fundamentals of gifted education. (See all of the cohort choices listed at the end of this description.)

This class offers gifted kids and advanced thinkers a place to belong here on Outschool. They'll be able to be with their peers and share their strengths and interests with others. Each class will provide students with engaging enrichment activities purposefully chosen for the gifted learner.

Class sessions will be a mix of higher-level-thinking challenges with both closed and open-ended answers. Activities will strive to promote: creative thinking, inductive/deductive logic, divergent critical thinking, analytical skills, and social-emotional skills relevant to gifted thinkers. The teacher will gently push each student to work outside of his/her analytical comfort zone and to reach a higher level of potential in creative thinking and fluency of ideas. My teaching style is best described as friendly, calm, and creative but also structured.

***Please note that this class is not an advanced core subject, for example advanced placement math.***

The class schedule will usually include a Brain Stretch (logic puzzle, riddle, creative conundrum), and the main enrichment challenge activity. One class meeting a month will be devoted to a gifted social-emotional topic and socialization amongst the cohort.

The class curriculum is guided by gifted best practices and research-based frameworks such as: The Paul Model of Reasoning, Torrance Creative Problem Solving Model, and the William & Mary Research Model.

These learning goals will differ from student to student, and all of them are ongoing and not final, but they offer a general understanding of the objectives.

-Evolve problem solving ability.
-Foster independent and self directed learning.
-Develop relationships with other gifted kids.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Enrichment logic can often be challenging for some students. Students will be actively encouraged to think creatively so please make sure that your child understands this. The class pace will be faster due the nature of the gifted learning acceleration. This class is meant to challenge student thinking and it may be uncomfortable to experience that "brain stretch" at first. Children with gifted abilities often have concurring socio-emotional intensities in areas like over-excitability, emotional feelings, and high sensitivities. I will do my best to guide the child through these feelings if they arise in class, but a parent may need to help if your child needs some one-on-one attention. Please make sure you have read the list of topics, as some may be sensitive areas to your child. Stay in touch with me, during our Ongoing session, and I will be happy to help your gifted thinker in any manner that I am able.
Supply List
A notebook (Either wide ruled or college ruled depending upon student's preference.)
Pencil, and occasionally other school supplies such as paper, glue, tape, scissors and markers/colored pencils/crayons.
PDF handouts will be posted in the classroom to print as needed for certain classes.
Some classes may need additional, easy-to-find household supplies.
*Please check the classroom each week to see what supplies are needed.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
