Please be aware I must have a minimum of two students to proceed with this class. This class will provide a broad overview of the physical and human geography of Canada, with a strong emphasis on the physical. During this class, we will locate and label the provinces and territories, rivers, lakes, mountains and other geographical areas of Canada, including the Saint Lawrence Seaway. Surrounding bodies of water and islands will also be identified. We will use Google Earth, Google Maps and other resources. Learners will receive links to three different maps of Canada: one plain map of Canada, one showing the boundaries between the provinces and territories and one showing the hydrology of Canada In addition to learning about the physical geography we will also briefly discuss Canada's strong trading partnership with the United States, the ethnic groups, languages and religions (just facts!) present in Canada. Learners will learn about the importance of the Saint Lawrence Seaway, be introduced to a mnemonic to help them remember the Great Lakes of North America, learn where Niagara Falls are, as well as descriptions of many other map locations. Most of my lessons include map work, discussions, slides, short videos and lecturing. I tend to be quite relaxed and follow the students' interests, although we will stay focused on that lesson's topic. I try to end all classes with a short game/quiz to assess learning. It is expected that the students know their compass directions. N, E, S, W! (Never, Ever, Stop Wondering/Wandering) :-) If none of the days/times suit your schedule, please do not hesitate to contact me and request another section. **********NB: Upon arriving to class, students will be provided with a link which will take them directly to the Nearpod lesson. The learners will then split their screens so that Zoom appears on one side of their computer screen and Nearpod will appear on the other side of their computer screen. Learners who do not wish to split their screens can, alternatively, use two devices, where one device is on Zoom and the other device is on their laptop, etc.
Learning Goals
Students will gain a better understanding of the physical geography of Canada.
