Students will participate in a role-playing game that allows them to experience various parts of Greek Mythology as a young hero/heroine. The quest of each hero/heroine will be to collect the 5 pieces of The Golden Fleece. The Golden Fleece has been stolen from its home of Thessaly and ripped into 5 pieces. Each section is being guarded by a different mythological monster. Class #1: Students will fully create their hero/heroine character on the character sheet. They will choose a Greek God/Goddess as their patron. They will receive special items and choose their abilities. Finally, they will need to retrieve the first part of the Golden Fleece from the Colchian Dragon in the sacred grove of Ares. Class #2: The characters will journey to Thrace for the second part of the fleece. They will need to defeat three Harpies to continue their quest and gain a great reward. Class #3: The characters will journey to Thebes for the third part of the fleece. They will need to defeat the Sphinx to continue their quest and gain a great reward. Class #4: The characters will journey to Lycia for the fourth part of the fleece. They will need to defeat the Chimera to continue their quest and gain a great reward. Class #5: The characters will journey to Lake Lerna, South of Argos for the fifth and final part of the fleece. They will need to defeat the Hydra to finish their quest and restore The Golden Fleece to the town of Thessaly. This is a role-playing game with some similarities in format to other role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons. I have chosen to do it in a much more simplified format so that the class would still be focused on gaining more knowledge in Greek Mythology.
Learning Goals
The goal of our lesson is to experience some of the adventures that happen in Greek Mythology. If the student has knowledge of Greek Mythology, their hero/heroine will make wise decisions in the different encounters. If the student has not read Greek Mythology, they will encounter new monsters, gods/goddesses, and places. Every student will receive all the information they need to make the best decision for their hero/heroine.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Mythology often has a lot of violence and death due to their stories centered around war, heroes vs. monsters, impossible quests, and jealous gods/goddesses.
