Class Experience
Some people in history lead interesting lives and Ronald Reagan was one of them. Born into a poor family he achieved fame and political success through hard work. Very talented, he was a lifeguard, sports announcer, actor, governor and president! In this course we will learn all about the personal life, and major events, of Ronald Reagan’s life. There are many interesting stories and fascinating moments that students will enjoy while also learning more about the 20th century, politics, international relations, and the Cold War. In this class students will thoughtfully discuss, explore and better understand critical moments in American History. I will explain multiple events in the 20th century via PowerPoint video presentations then students will add to their knowledge by completing two assignments each week to force further thinking and solidify the information learned. Much of my teaching style is based on asking questions and engaging with students with the goal of forcing deeper thinking. Here are some of the things we will be discussing in this course and much more! Week 1 – Growing up in Illinois, personal life, going to college, lifeguarding Week 2 – Working in radio, going to Hollywood, marriage, WWII experiences, testifying to Congress Week 3 – Touring the nation while working for General Electric, involvement in the 1964 presidential campaign, becoming governor of California Week 4 – Running for president, tax and defense policy, “Star Wars”, Cold Warrior against Communism, legacy *This is a FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE class so there are no live meetings. Pre-recorded video lessons with a PowerPoint presentation provide learners with plenty of information and details. Success is dependent on students participating and interacting with one another through weekly assignments including writing forums and the creation of their own videos via Flipgrid. Students will “take a side” on various issues/events covered during the week, respond to writing prompts or engage with open-ended questions related to the weekly material. I will be interacting with students 2-3 times per week, checking on student progress and am also available via the Outschool classroom or by email.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I earned a Master’s Degree in History and another in Education, have lived and taught abroad, teach at several universities and also teach at an international high school. In my career I’ve seen many students struggle to understand History or fail to have much interest in learning it. By exploring several important events throughout the life of a recent president students can get a better sense of history and better grasp why the world is the way it is today!
