Class Experience

Jellyfish and comb jellies are beautiful animals drifting throughout the world's oceans. Jellyfish with pulsating bells and long trailing tentacles and comb jellies with combs generating a rainbow like appearance, display gracefulness and elegancy in our marine environments. With similar appearances, these amazing creatures have different life histories and are members of different phylas in the marine environment.
In this class, students will learn about these majestic creatures. Each week we will look at different species, where they are found, and the characteristics that make them so unique. We will look at extraordinary species such as box jellyfish, which is believed to have some of the strongest toxins found in nature or the immortal jellyfish, which is believed to have an everlasting life cycle. Students will explore the behavior, eating habits, location, structure, and the factors that are impacting their population increases or decreases throughout the world's oceans.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been working as a private tutor for grades 5-12 in Science and English since 1999. I also worked as student mentor to post doctoral and summer student fellows for over ten years while I worked as a Research Chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. During my work there, I had the opportunity to become and author in a text book on high resolution mass spectometry and as well as being part of a documentary on the Discovery Channel. Previous to my work at Woods Hole, I worked as a chemical technician in a local environmental lab working on land and water pollution. During the summer, I also was blessed with the most incredible opportunity of working as a naturalist on a whale watch boat. Following my time working in research, I owned and operated a childcare for over 7 years where I taught preschool and tutored grade school children in the afternoon. I earned my B.S. in Cellular/Molecular Biology with a minor in Biochemistry from Bridgewater State University in 2000 and a M.S. in Education in 2015 from Walden University. Currently I am working on my M.S. in Biology with a specialization in Environmental Sciences from the University of Nebraska, Kearney. I have loved teaching and mentoring students of all ages and am thankful to add online teaching to my experiences in education. I am a huge advocate of online learning since it has not only benefited me, but my children as well.
