Description
Class Experience
This curriculum will introduce students to scientific skills and thinking with a focus on the subject of astronomy. In this course, students will be taught the concepts that they should know before taking high school astronomy. This will include the basics of matter and energy, how scientific subjects are intertwined, and how to think like a scientist.
The teacher is a 7th-12th grade certified teacher in General Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science. She has over 20 years of experience teaching in brick and mortar schools and 4 years of teaching science and chemistry for Outschool.
Students will be assigned a homework after each class period. Homework assignments are due by the beginning of the next week. Homework will consist of questions discussed during the first weekly class period and lab writing from the second weekly class period. All homework will be graded and returned to students.
Students will be assessed based on their homework and open book tests. A letter grade based on a 10 point scale will be earned by the students and reported to parents at the end of the course. If something different is needed for a charter school, please let teacher know and it can be accommodated.
1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Parental guidance is needed for any student wanting to do the labs outside of class. Students will be required to keep camera on if doing a lab during class.
This class will use the Focus on Middle School Astronomy Student Textbook (3rd Edition) (ISBN:9781941181683) and Focus on Middle School Astronomy Student Laboratory Notebook (3rd Edition) (ISBN:9781941181683). Both can be purchased from many online retailers for about $20-$30 each.
