Class Experience

In this course, students will learn about the seven elements of art (line, shape, form, value, color, texture, and space). The elements of art are the most basic parts of any artwork and it is crucial for students to understand how to incorporate these into their artwork in order to be successful art students. No prior knowledge is required for this course.

Each class will concentrate on one of the elements of art and a small project will be assigned to practice using that element. We will discuss project instructions and expectations, then begin on each assignment together. Each week, students will complete their projects at home. At the beginning of the following class, students will present their project and there will be a class critique. The last session of the course are designated for completing a culminating project.

Homework will include work time on art projects and may include practicing art exercises to help with projects.

Each project will be presented and discussed by the class group. Students will self-evaluate their projects.

Students will need: Sketchbook or Notebook, #2 pencil, sharpener, white vinyl eraser, colored pencil - 24-count or higher - Crayola is good quality and affordable, 9x12 drawing paper pad, fine sharpie, ultra-fine sharpie. These materials can be purchased for $10-$20 total at a big box or art supply store.

I am passionate about students learning the elements of art and principles of design in order to give them the proper framework for creating successful works of art. With this knowledge, students can then add their own personal style and ideas to make truly original works of art. The elements of art and principles of design help to give a more concrete approach to art-making which in turn, allows more students to feel successful making art. Any students planning to progress through any levels of art should have this knowledge.

I teach this course yearly at the summer camp that I hold at my art studio and students are thrilled with the work that they are able to complete during this course.
