What is a dreidel? How do you play the dreidel game? Come find out! (Please note the separate classes for ages 9-12.) Taught by a teacher with an MA in Jewish Studies, this class introduces students to the spinning top called a dreidel, often used to play a fun game during the eight day festival of Hanukah. I have an academic MA in Jewish Studies from the University of Indiana-Bloomington. I have also completed several other academic Jewish Studies and Religious Studies classes at the graduate level. I was raised Jewish, and I taught Hebrew school for several years.
Please bring the following items to class: Paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Optional: Bring a dreidel, IF your student has one and wants to show it to the class. This is not required!
This is a secular and inclusive class about the dreidel and the dreidel game, with some information about the holiday of Hanukah. All students are welcome. No prior knowledge is required. There is mention of fighting/battles in the Hanukkah story, which could be mentioned in this class. Spinning tops like the dreidel have historically been used for gambling and other games, so the term gambling is likely to be used and explained in this class.
