In this novel, Neftali has a rough relationship with his dad because his dad is very harsh and strict about what he wants Neftali to do. There is also talk of the Mapuche Indians, and the debate the characters encounter is whether or not the Mapuche should be forced off of their land because of Chile's advancing society.
