In this 4 week course, students will learn new vocabulary words, practice their reading fluency, and explore the elements of a play using Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett's dramatization, "The Diary of Anne Frank."

Class experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Students will improve their understanding of drama elements. Students will read and comprehend a play. Students will improve their reading fluency by reading out loud to their classmates. Students will explore literary elements such as suspense, characterization, flashback, conflict, and more.
I am a licensed English teacher for students in grades 5-12. I have used this play as a teaching tool with my middle school students for the past 4 years. Students always have a great time reading out loud with each other!
Homework Offered
Students will read together in class. There will be no outside reading. I will provide enrichment material for students to peruse outside of class, but it is not mandatory. The only mandatory homework is the final assessment. Students will be able to complete the assessment in any format they choose (essay, video, etc.), and students will have topic options for their final.
0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
I would be happy to provide a letter grade if requested. All students will receive feedback on their final assessment. Students will receive instant feedback during class when playing comprehension games and answering questions out loud.

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
This play is a tragedy. Things get very tense toward the end when the family is found by the Gestapo. There is kissing between adults and between teenagers.

A couple of the lines contain swear words. I think there are two in the entire play. Students do not need to read these. They are welcome to replace the words with something they are comfortable with or they can skip over the words entirely.

Parental guidance is difficult to find regarding this play script. Please remember that we are not watching the movie and we are not reading Anne's published diary. This is a play based on Anne's diary and experiences. This play is often used in middle school classrooms.

Students will occasionally play games to check their comprehension. I will provide codes for Blooket and Kahoot. Students should not need accounts on these sites. We may also use Nearpod for answer questions as we read.
Please have a copy of "The Diary of Anne Frank" by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. This is our main resource.
