In this one-time class, we will take a dangerous tour of the world! We will learn about some of the most extreme places on the planet, exploring both geography and science in each location. We will take a look at dangerous locations and events all over the world - from Alpine avalanches to extreme heat in the desert! We will cover a quick scientific explanation of natural phenomena such as hurricanes look at the biology of fearful creatures like crocodiles. This class is taught through a slideshow and discussion. Learners are encouraged to participate throughout the class. Learners are provided with a printable world map and we will mark each location, for practice in locating different countries on the map. This is a fun, quick overview of many topics in geography and science. This class is a companion to The Dangerous World Tour: Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Snakes, Sharks and More! These two classes can be taken independently and in any order.
Learning Goals
Learners will develop mapping skills in finding and marking each location on a map. Hello Families!
My name is Jennifer and I taught my first class for Outschool in March, 2021. From that first class to the present, I have been so happy to teach such diverse, curious, imaginative, and AMAZING learners! I look forward to working with all of the learners who enroll in my classes.
When I am not teaching on Outschool, I homeschool my four busy children! In our home, we are crazy about science, nature, animals, Pokemon, Minecraft, playing board games and more! My kids also love connecting with other learners in a variety of Outschool classes. I come to homeschooling from a professional teaching background, and I have classroom experience in all elementary grades. Most of my experience came in middle grade math and science, and I love math and science still! I have a Bachelor of Education degree, with qualifications for both elementary and high school, and teachable subjects in math and science. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, with a psychology minor (with a focus on children’s psychology). The last 15 years of my life have been all about teaching - in the classroom, online, and in our homeschool!
As well as classroom teaching, I have tutored math (grades 5- adult), volunteered as a storyteller with the local library, been a Girl Guides Leader, taught Junior Achievement classes, and worked as a nanny and a babysitter. Our family is involved in a homeschool co-op where I have shared in teaching many homeschooled kids.
One of my favourite discoveries about homeschooling has been how exciting it is for ME to learn new things right along with my children! I love to follow my children’s interests, and so over the years I have learned about harbour seals, baseball history, cardboard engineering, bridges, ancient Egypt, ornithology and so much more! You can expect to see a wide range of interests reflected in my Outschool course offerings. I also love to hear suggestions from learners - so let me know your class ideas! I love to learn! And I love to teach others what I have learned!
When I am not homeschooling or teaching here on Outschool, you can probably find me reading! I also enjoy hiking, playing board games, and baking. I am so grateful to get the chance to work with many wonderful families through Outschool and I can’t wait to meet you and share my love of learning!
