Class experience
Let’s make interesting, memorable, and catchy songs! Join me for this four meeting course as you develop your lyric writing skills, learn what makes a good introduction and end of a song, and create parts for a small band of vocals, guitar, bass, keyboard, and drums. By the end of the class, you will have written and produced your own pop song! Don't worry if you can't play all those instruments--we will also talk about ways to create them on your computer or tablet! During the first class,...
During: Class 1 you will learn about balancing lines with syllable counts, rhyming, and creating word pictures Class 2 you will learn about composing music for a singer and guitarist Class 3 you will learn how to compose the music for the rhythm section: bass, keyboard, and drummer Class 4 you will add these all together into a recording
You will need (all free applications): To know how to play a musical instrument Blank staff (https://static.musictheory.net/pdf/blank.pdf) or TAB paper (https://www.imusic-school.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/tab-diagramme.pdf) Notebook paper Pencil Eraser Access to YouTube, Spotify, or other similar music streaming service Access to a free audio recording app (Apple: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/voice-memos/id1069512134, Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.media.bestrecorder.audiorecorder&hl=en_US&gl=US, computer: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/) Access to a tablet that runs Apple's Garageband (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/garageband/id408709785) or a computer that runs Audacity and Kontakt Komplete (https://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/bundles/komplete-start/). If using a computer to record, I recommend purchasing a computer microphone. The TONOR podcasting TC 30 has great reviews on Amazon, can plug into a USB 3.0, and is inexpensive (https://www.amazon.com/Microphone-TONOR-Podcasting-Compatible-TC30/dp/B08CVP2HXP/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=microphone+usb&qid=1614962505&sr=8-4).
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
We will refer to family-friendly pop songs as we learn about lyrics, melodies, and band sections. These will be available on YouTube, Spotify, and other music streaming platforms. While listening to them is encouraged, it is not required. I also recommend using www.wordhippo.com to find rhymes for lyrics. We will look at a few in-class.
