Class Experience

Have you ever heard a really cool song? Are you inspired to write a song of your own? This is the class for you! During this four meeting class, you will learn about writing lyrics, chords, chord progressions and the layout of pop songs (with verses, a chorus, and a bridge), when and how to rhyme, inexpensive recording apps, and recording your own pop song.

Our first class will be about lyrics, rhymes, and forms of pop songs. You will work on writing your song lyrics, learn about perfect and slant rhymes, and typical song rhyme schemes for verses, choruses, and bridges.

During our second class, you will work on a melody for your song. You will learn how to write memorable, catchy, and easy-to-sing melodies, and how to write down the notes so you can practice singing the melody.

For our third class, you will focus on chords, the difference between major and minor chords, and how to put those into a chord progression. You will learn how songwriters usually make their chord progressions and create your own!

In our fourth class, you will learn about recording, exploring different free mobile apps and computer programs.

You will need to know how to play a musical instrument, blank staff or TAB paper, notebook paper, pencil, eraser, access to YouTube, Spotify, or other similar music streaming service, and access to a free audio recording app. My recommendations are listed, but you may use another source or app if you prefer.

Learning Goals

You will learn in:

Class 2 about catchy, easy-to-sing, and inventive melodies,

Class 4 about recording and which apps to use.

Supply List
You will need (all free applications):
To know how to play a musical instrument
Blank staff (https://static.musictheory.net/pdf/blank.pdf) or TAB paper (https://www.imusic-school.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/tab-diagramme.pdf)
Notebook paper
Pencil
Eraser
Access to YouTube, Spotify, or other similar music streaming service
Access to a free audio recording app (Apple: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/voice-memos/id1069512134, Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.media.bestrecorder.audiorecorder&hl=en_US&gl=US, computer: https://www.audacityteam.org/download/)

If using a computer to record, I recommend purchasing a computer microphone. The TONOR podcasting TC 30 has great reviews on Amazon, can plug into a USB 3.0, and is inexpensive (https://www.amazon.com/Microphone-TONOR-Podcasting-Compatible-TC30/dp/B08CVP2HXP/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=microphone+usb&qid=1614962505&sr=8-4).

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Sources
We will refer to family-friendly pop songs as you learn about form, melodies, and chords. These will be available on YouTube, Spotify, and other music streaming platforms. While listening to them is encouraged, it is not required. I also recommend using www.wordhippo.com to find rhymes for lyrics. We will look at a few in-class.

Hello Outschool! I'm Mrs. Becca, a lover of music, knitting, books, and baking. Having a Bachelor's in Music Composition for Film, TV, and Games from Berklee College of Music, I teach creative classes on writing music, performing music, music theory, sound effects, and musical score composition. I have studied music through piano, voice, and composition for 19+ years and taught music for 8+ years.

My love for art and creativity is best summed up by the author C. S. Lewis: “We do not want merely to see beauty . . . We want something else which can hardly be put into words — to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it."
