Hands-on and full of exploration, in this class learners will study filmmaking sound effect techniques, ways to record their own sound effects and foley sounds, and how to create an impressive final project!

Class experience

Over the course of the class, learners will study ways to record sound effects and foley sounds in the free applications GarageBand (Mac) and ProTools Intro (PC), edit sounds to make them louder or softer, design and layer sounds to make new sounds, using different objects and sounds to take the place of normal sounds, and choose from some short videos (nature, fantasy, or science fiction) and create your own sound effects to go with it!
I am a professional sound designer, Foley artist, and film score composer with experience in multiple short films and television shows.
Homework Offered
This class has five assignments, one each week for Classes One through Five. Assignments are due the day before the next class. To encourage learners to apply what they've studied in class and not plagiarize sounds from other sources, they should create and record their own sounds (even if the computer program they use in class has pre-recorded sounds included). All assignments should be privately uploaded to me using the “Teacher” tab, found in the Classroom. The Class One assignment is to record and export an audio file. The Class Two assignment is to edit and export an audio file. The audio file will be provided in the classroom for learners to download. Upon approval from me, students can share their edited audio with their classmates! The Class Three assignment is to find sounds nearby that can be used to replace sounds commonly heard in movies. Upon approval from me, students can share their sounds with their classmates! The Class Four assignment is to choose a short movie from the provided options and submit a list of sounds that can be used. The Class Five assignment is to showcase their finished movie! Upon approval from me, students will be able to play their movie in class for their classmates. Students with approval will also be given the opportunity to upload their project to the classroom for others to see.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Learners will receive a written and video response to their assignments. They will also have the opportunity to share with their classmates.
Grades Offered
I recommend that learners record their sounds with a USB microphone, although a headphone microphone will also work well.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
I will provide clean and interesting videos for the learners to creatively apply their sound effects and foley. If requested, parents can view the videos beforehand.

GarageBand or ProTools Intro (not both) are required for this class. GarageBand is only available for Apple products, and if you have a Mac, that is what I recommend. ProTools Intro is a great choice if learners have a PC. Both software programs can be downloaded from the links provided on this page, or I can send them to you. Neither program includes ads or links to websites!

NOTE: Both GarageBand and ProTools Intro require the creation of an account. If you have a Mac, you have already created the iCloud account necessary for downloading GarageBand. To download ProTools Intro, you must create an Avid (ProTools' parent company) account as well as an iLok account. The website will guide you through the necessary steps to create both accounts. Learners will still be able to use the software even if the accounts belong to their parents or guardians.
Learners will need free applications to record and edit their sounds. If learners use a Mac, I recommend using Apple's GarageBand (linked elsewhere on this page). If learners use a PC, I recommend downloading the free application ProTools Intro (linked elsewhere on this page).
