The College Application Essay Workshop

Perhaps the most revealing and authentic essay a student will ever write. Great eye-opening exercise even for those students who are not going to college or have yet to decide on a major.

Class Experience

By end of the workshop, you can expect to have experienced/be more familiar with:
-College-level essay writing expectations (content and form)
-Critical thinking
-Pre-writing strategies
-Strategies for approaching essay writing
-Crafting strong conclusions
-The difference between writing what you feel vs writing what you mean
-What it means to edit/revise
Broken into intentional steps, the college application essay writing process uncovers the most authentic side of each and every individual. When fully committed, you can expect the end product to be one of the most profound pieces of writing in your life because the layers of who you were, are, and hope to become are explored. As the author of a student success guide and over twenty-five years of teaching and training experience, this approach provides you and your peers a clearer understanding of your purpose and helps articulate the next steps as it applies to your place in the world. It is so deep, so personal, so profoundly powerful that parts of this essay (and the notes used when crafting it) can also be used when applying for scholarships.
Progress is assessed by:
-your preparation ahead of the workshop
-your engagement during the workshop
-demonstrating suggested content essential for each step forward
3 hours per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
