To do research and imagining that you are living during a specific time period or during a historical event is a great way to learn about history. In this class, we will all work together to create a newspaper with articles and pictures for three different historical events/eras. The Reformation with main focus on Martin Luther The American Revolution Women Suffragette with main focus on Great Britain Each era will be covered in four classes and I will put together the articles to a newspaper for everyone. The first class for each historical event will be a teacher-led summary and we will brainstorm what our newspaper should cover. The following three classes will be research and writing in class but the student will also do some research and writing outside of class. We will "interview" famous people including Martin Luther, George Washington, Emmeline Pankhurst. We will create advertisements for our newspaper, perhaps an ad for Martin Luther's German bible or a pin that says Votes for Women. We will have articles/timelines with the most important historical events. We will also cover the opposing sides; The Catholic Church/the pope, The British and people against women's right to vote. The students can illustrate the articles with drawings, paintings, their own photos or photos found online and are welcome to draw comics, write poems etc for the newspaper. We will use the breakout rooms to create smaller groups that I can go in between to give individual feedback and to help with research and give some peace to write during class. The students are welcome to work alone or with each other to write the articles and can always use the Outschool classroom to communicate with each other. The students need to submit their articles in a word document or similar format so I can put it all together. I will be the main editor and fix major spelling and grammar mistakes but will leave their individual style and voice intact. The newspapers will be shared in the classroom for everyone to print. The students can use a pen name for the articles. The image in the class listing from Pixaby
