By the end of this class, students will be able to: - Describe how chemistry and geology are linked - Describe some of the elements that make up different minerals and gemstones - Describe the sources of different colors in minerals and gemstones This class will be a combination of lecture and teacher-led class discussion. We will discuss different gemstones, rocks, and minerals, their chemical composition, and how chemistry is used in geology. Handouts will be provided that summarize the information that was covered in class. Students will also have an opportunity at the end of class to show a few of their favorite rocks or minerals. This class is designed to give a broad overview and introduction to the chemistry of rocks and minerals. If students are looking for more in-depth information after this class, I also offer a 6-week flex class (The Chemistry of Rocks, Minerals, Gemstones, and Crystals) which goes into more detail on crystal structures and how minerals and gemstones are classified as well as looks at a broader range of minerals and gemstones. I've also just added a Chemistry Rocks! class where we cover a different mineral or gemstone in detail every week. No background knowledge is required to take this class- just a desire to learn!

Handouts summarizing the class will be provided after class. Students may wish to bring some of their favorite rocks and minerals to share at the end of class.
