Class Experience

If you've ever been to a museum that has rock and mineral samples, you've probably seen the case of rocks that's kept in a dark room with a black light. These fascinating rocks and minerals often give off a bright and colorful glow. In this class, we will learn about different minerals that glow and the chemistry behind why they glow.

For students who have taken The Chemistry of Rocks and Minerals, this class expands on the information in that class as we get to spend 50 minutes taking a closer look at fluorescent minerals.

Class will be a combination of lecture, instructor-led discussion, and an opportunity at the end of class for students to show samples of rocks and minerals that they have. Students will also get a chance to see a collection of fluorescent minerals during class both under regular light and blacklight.

No prior knowledge is required for this class- just a desire to learn!

A handout with some information about fluorescent minerals will be included 24 hours before class starts that can be printed before or after class (it is not needed during class)

Teacher expertise and credentials
Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate in Science
I am a certified chemistry teacher (grades 7-12) with almost two decades of teaching experience. I have 7 years of experience in the high school classroom and almost two years of experience teaching online through Outschool. I have also done private tutoring at the high school and college level, taught freshman college chemistry recitations and labs, and worked in various science outreach settings including museums, middle school after school science programs, and science summer camps. From these experiences, I have worked with a lot of different types of learners at various stages of interest, ability, and motivation- from preschoolers wide-eyed at everything in science to high school students simply taking the class as a requirement to college freshmen chemistry majors passionate about the course with never ending questions. I can tailor my teaching style to fit the learner, and I do what I can to make it approachable by anyone.
