The Career Writing Experience
In this 8-week course, students will begin building their professional portfolios by treating hobbies as possible career development and by identifying career choices they may enjoy.
Class experience
US Grade 7 - 10
The first class I will offer is a college and career readiness class for middle and high school students. The course is 8-weeks long and is called The Career Writing Experience. The class will cover interest exploration, understanding and development of a mission statement around those interests, how to begin gaining experience as a young person in those interests, the needed education/training required to excel in those interests, discovery of personality traits, résumé writing and portfolio...
The breakdown of the course is as follows: WEEK ONE: Welcome to the Course (Students will become familiar with the course structure, general class rules, and grading policy.) Students will also discover their learning strengths and 4-digit personality. WEEK TWO: Course Importance & Vocabulary (Students will discover the correlation between education and crime and familiarize themselves with the course vocabulary. WEEK THREE: Hobbies & Career Choices (Students will brainstorm and analyze their interests and hobbies and evaluate which activities would make great career choices. ) WEEK FOUR: My Career Choice Paths (Students will dig deep about why they choose their career choices and what they need to learn to be successful. Students will walk away knowing how to research) WEEK FIVE: Beginning My Career Today (Students will be able to refine and adapt their career choices to ensure with their personalities and skills. This is a continuation from week-1.) WEEK SIX: Documenting My Work Experience (Students will recall and compile a list of each of their past work and volunteer experiences to create their first resume.) WEEK SEVEN: What Degree Do I Need? WEEK EIGHT: My Future Self writing prompt (Students will analyze the writing prompts in their journals, evaluate their responses, and produce a vision of themselves in the future. This is the only assignment for students this week and the essay should be between 200-500 words.)
I have several years experience teaching study and life skills at a public school and much lived experience in college and the workforce.
Homework Offered
Students will be expected to complete the weekly assignments independently before the next class.2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Students will be assessed weekly (excluding the 8th week) using the quiz feature on Google Forms.Grades Offered
The Career Writing Journal will be provided as a 31-page, downloadable PDF. Students will need to print the journal to write in it. Students may also type their responses directly into the provided Google Documents or a blank Google Document. Students will be responsible for completing the homework assignments before the next session. Students will be assessed using Google Forms.

Students will tune into child-friendly videos on Youtube which provides further insight into the topic. A full list of videos can be provided upon request.
Our main text is The Career Writing Journal. A full list of the child-friendly, content related Youtube videos can be provided upon request. Students will be asked to go to certain websites to Enhance their learning, e.g., A website to discover their 4-digit personality code to discover who they are.
